Back-to-School Fitness: Keeping Active During a Busy Season

It’s back-to-school season, which means scurrying around from one obligation to the next. Between school, work, homework, activities, and family commitments, this time of year can bring a lot of stress for both kids and parents.

Unfortunately, we often neglect the things that are most important to our well-being—things like sleep, exercise, and taking time for ourselves.

I get it. It can be hard to juggle work, school, family, and fitness. But what if I told you it doesn’t have to be complicated?

Everyone can find 20–30 minutes in their day for a quick workout. It comes down to time management and, most importantly, committing to a goal. Discipline will ultimately determine whether you stick with your routine.

Start by planning your week.
Take a few minutes to write out your weekly schedule and identify times when you can fit in a workout. Visualizing your daily routine can bring clarity and help you plan your time more effectively.

Set small, achievable goals.
Once you’ve committed your workout routine to paper, set a weekly goal. For example, you might start with a goal of completing 10 push-ups each day. The following week, increase that to 15, and continue building from there. Small, achievable goals are much more sustainable than setting unrealistic expectations.

Get the family involved!
For larger families, finding time to exercise can feel like an even greater challenge. Why not make fitness a family activity? Plan a “fitness outing” at a local park, go for a family walk, or get active together in the backyard.

Group training is also a great way to stay motivated, build momentum, and hold each other accountable.

Always remember—you’re not in this alone!

Simple ways to get back into fitness:

  • Take a 20–30 minute walk.
  • Do a quick bodyweight workout at home.
  • Set a daily push-up, sit-up, or squat goal.
  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Go for a family bike ride.
  • Play an active game with your kids.
  • Visit your local park and use the outdoor space to exercise.
  • Stretch for 10 minutes before bed.
  • Schedule your workouts just like you would any other appointment.
  • Most importantly, start small and stay consistent!

Back-to-school season is busy, but taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be another source of stress. Find a routine that works for you and your family, set realistic goals, and keep moving forward—one day at a time.

Your health is worth making time for.
