In my 20+ years of practicing and training in martial arts, I have encountered numerous plateaus. These hurdles are a natural part of the training journey, as our minds and bodies constantly strive to reach the next level. Without finding ways to advance, we may lose interest and consider quitting.
So, how can we break through these plateaus? Creativity and changes in our training environment are key. Altering training partners or focusing on small, measurable goals can reignite our motivation and lead to new achievements. Additionally, seeking feedback from instructors, increasing training intensity, or exploring new techniques can further enhance our skills and help us surpass our limits.
By embracing these strategies, we can overcome plateaus and maintain our passion for training.
Try adapting to a few of these strategies to break through your plateau:
- Change your environment or routine:
Changing your environment in a group setting would mean trying to train with different partners or asking your instructor for some 1 on 1 help. You could also try some of the routines at home or in an outdoor setting.
- Focus on weaknesses
Set short-term goals that focus’ on your weaknesses. Try improving specific techniques rather that the entire package. This could involve getting better at foot work, or a specific kick. Once you have reached a level you are comfortable with, move on to focusing on a new technique to improve on.
- Intension over Repetition
Although repetition is necessary for anyone to master a specific skill, even more important is training with intention. This means that you are focused on the technical aspect of the drill rather than just repeating it over and over again.
- Visual Aid
Supplement your training with some videos that highlight specific skills or competition matches. This can give you a greater insight on your own trainings and help you reach a higher level in your Martial Art. Do not rely solely on videos but use them as a way to add to the teachings you receive in the dojo.
- Recovery is key
This is often an important aspect in training that is often overlooked. Plateaus are often caused by overtraining. Take time away from the mat and dive into the world of meditation, and nutrition. Rest your body as much as possible in order to come back stronger and sharper.
- Mental Reset
This can be the most challenging strategy as it involves you to change or reshape your way of thinking. Instead of looking at your plateau as a failure, reframe your thinking and view it as period of growth. Try to think of every obstacle in your training as a lesson and overcome that lesson by seeking help from others and learning from your mistakes.
Overall, plateaus are inevitable and you will surely encounter them at some point in your training journey. They key thing to remember is that when you reach this plateau, it’s ok to seek help/advise from your instructor and/or peers. Always keep yourself motivated by adopting the strategies outlined above and you will never stop loving this sport.
Good luck in your training journeys!
